Woad: The Colour of Courage / Guado: Il colore del coraggio

Woad is the blue pigment derived from the leaves of the plant Isatis tinctoria.

Of asiatic origin, the colour was introduced into Western Europe during the Neolithic period and became a fundamental ingredient in the European dyeing tradition. For an error of translation from Julius' Caesar’s text Commentaries on the Gallic War, it was associated with Celtic warriors, saying that they painted themselves with this vibrant pigment as part of their preparation for battle, an image which still exists in popular culture as seen in the 1995 film Braveheart. It is more likely, however, that the substance used by the warriors was an iorn or copper based colour such as blue vitriol.

Il guado è il pigmento blu derivato dalle foglie di una pianta Isatis tinctoria.

Di origine asiatica, il colore fu introdotto nell’Europa occidentale in tempi neolitici per poi diventare ingrediente fondamentale della tintura europea. Per un errore di traduzione dal testo Commentarii de Bello Gallico di Giulio Cesare, fu associato ai guerrieri celti, che lo usavano per dipingersi per farsi coraggio in battaglia, un’immagine ancora comune come visto nel film Braveheart. E' più probabile, invece, che la sostanza usata dai guerrieri fosse un colore a base di ferro o di rame come il vetriolo blu.   

I have planted my woad seeds in pots as part of my dyer's garden for this year and am looking forward to sharing their progress with you. The precious extract from the leaves produces a range of blues from sky blue to petrol and it is one of my favorite pigments; growing it myself gives me the wonderful sensation of carrying on one of the most ancient dyeing techniques used in Europe.

Ho piantato i miei semi di guado e non vedo l'ora di raccoglere le foglie che estrarre il prezioso pigmento che produce una gamma di diverse tonalità di blu, dal celeste al petrolio. E' uno dei miei pigmenti preferiti e coltivarlo mi da la meravigliosa sensazione di portare avanti una delle tradizioni tintorie più antiche dell'Europa.

Welcome to the Textile Support blog, a place to share the experience of running a school of textile arts in Italy. In this first post I would like to introduce our physical surroundings so that you can imagine where we are when reading future posts.

Textile Support is an idea which I had had in the back of my mind for some years but it was not until I moved to Pavia with my partner Ignacio that I understood how to realize the project. Many ask “why Pavia?” as though it were an odd choice, however Pavia was the perfect place; a beautiful historic Italian city surrounded by a national park and yet only 30min by train from Milan, the heart of Italian fashion and design.

Benvenuti nel blog di Textile Support, un posto dove condividere l’esperienza di costruire una scuola di arti tessili in Italia. In questo primo post vorrei introdurre il luogo fisico di Textile Support così potete immaginare, dove siamo quando leggete dei post futuri.

Textile Support è un’idea che ho avuto in mente da diversi anni, ma è stato solo quando mi sono trasferita a Pavia con il mio compagno che ho capito come realizzare il progetto. Tanti mi chiedono “perché Pavia?” come se fosse una scelta strana, però Pavia era il posto perfetto; una bellissima città storica italiana circondata da un parco naturale ma solo 30min in treno da Milano, il cuore della moda e del design italiano.

A cultured city, home to one of Europe’s oldest universities, it seemed like an deal location to bring this dream to life, but once the city was decided it was not so easy to find the building; this is one of the problems with dreams… they tend to lead us to have very high standards!  After six months of carefully searching every street we found our beautiful premises in Via della Pusterla 26.

Una città colta e sede di una delle università più antiche dell’Europa, sembrava il posto ideale per costruire questo sogno, ma una volta decisa la città non è poi stata così facile trovare la sede; questo è il problema con i sogni… spesso ci portano ad avere delle aspettative altissime! Dopo sei mesi cercando lungo ogni via abbiamo trovato la nostra bellissima sede in Via della Pusterla 26.

We have a gallery space, studio, library/supplies room and bathrooms and also a little garden, there are no words to describe the enchantment which overcame me when I fist saw it and met the owner, there is something truly magical about the place

Abbiamo una galleria, un laboratorio, una biblioteca/magazzino di materiali, servizi e un giardinetto delizioso, non ci sono parole per descrivere l’incanto che mi ha preso la prima volta che l’o visto e conosciuto la proprietaria, c’è qualcosa di veramente magico in questo posto.

Having all the ingredients of a good story; a beautiful location, passion (for textiles) and a whole cast of interesting folk who come to learn, to teach and to exhibit, I hope this virtual space will become a mirror of the many interesting events that we have in programme and look forward to sharing them with you all.
