Generally when we think of tassels, little tufts of ratty thread hanging from the key to the china cabinet or the curtains of your grandmother's house come to mind; fussy little objects which are always an addition to something else rather than an artform in themselves, yet if we dig a little into the past we find that tassels have a long and fascinating history and are not by any means banal. 

Solitamente quando uno pensa alle nappe viene in mente un'immagine di oggettini frusti che pendono dalla chiave della vetrinetta delle porcellane o che decorano le tende alla casa della nonna; troppo elaborati e sempre una addizione eccessiva invece di un'arte a sé, però se scaviamo un poco nel passato troviamo che le nappe hanno una storia lunga, affascinante e non per niente scontata.

The art of tassel making has been around for thousands of years. In the Bible (Numbers 15:38-40) the faithful are urged to decorate their garments with blue tassels to remind them of the Lord's commandments and in the Middle and Far East there is a long tradition of using tassels to ward off evil. They are also found all around the globe from China to Egypt to Perù in an extraordinary variety of forms and techniques.

L’arte delle nappe è molto antica. Nella Bibbia (Numeri 15:38-40) i fedeli sono pregati di decorare i loro vestiti con delle piccole nappe blu per ricordarsi dei comandamenti del Signore e nel Medio ed Estremo Oriente esiste una lunga tradizione del uso delle nappe contro gli spiriti maligni. Si trovano in tutto il mondo, dalla Cina all’Egitto al Perù in una varietà straordinaria di tecniche e forme.

In Europe they became an important part of male costume in the second quarter of the 17^th century, the fanciful white linen constructions being a sign of wealth and status and can be seen in many male portraits of the time, particularly in Northern Europe.

In Europa diventarono parte importante del costume maschile nel secondo quarto del ‘600, queste costruzioni fantasiose di lino bianco furono simbolo di stato e benessere e si vedono in tanti ritratti dell’epoca, in particolare in Nord Europa.

During the 17th and 18th centuries the manufacture of polychrome silk and metal tassels also developed into a complex craft in Europe being used to decorate bags and other accessories, gowns and furnishings. These Baroque and Rococo tassels were produced throughout Western Europe and most particularly in France where a large-scale passamentry industry was established.

Durante il 17˚ e 18˚ secoli la manifattura di nappe di sete policrome e metallo diventò un mestiere complesso in Europa e si usarono per decorare le borse e altri accessori, vestiti e anche nell’arredamento. Queste nappe Barocche e Rococo si produssero in tutta l’Europa Occidentale e in particolare in Francia, dove ci fu una grande industria di passamanerie.

May 2012 will be devoted to tassels at Textile Support; we will have an exhibition of contemporary pieces by artists as well as courses and seminars on the subject. I will keep you posted as the date gets closer. In the mean time I will close with some images of the beautiful polychrome tassels made by textile and costume historian Thessy Schoenholzer Nichols on display in our gallery.

Maggio 2012 sarà dedicato alle nappe a Textile Support; avremo una mostra di nappe contemporanee creati d’artisti vari assieme a dei seminari e corsi sul tema. Vi terrò aggiornati mentre l’evento si avvicina. Welcome to the Textile Support blog, a place to share the experience of running a school of textile arts in Italy. In this first post I would like to introduce our physical surroundings so that you can imagine where we are when reading future posts.

Textile Support is an idea which I had had in the back of my mind for some years but it was not until I moved to Pavia with my partner Ignacio that I understood how to realize the project. Many ask “why Pavia?” as though it were an odd choice, however Pavia was the perfect place; a beautiful historic Italian city surrounded by a national park and yet only 30min by train from Milan, the heart of Italian fashion and design.

Benvenuti nel blog di Textile Support, un posto dove condividere l’esperienza di costruire una scuola di arti tessili in Italia. In questo primo post vorrei introdurre il luogo fisico di Textile Support così potete immaginare, dove siamo quando leggete dei post futuri.

Textile Support è un’idea che ho avuto in mente da diversi anni, ma è stato solo quando mi sono trasferita a Pavia con il mio compagno che ho capito come realizzare il progetto. Tanti mi chiedono “perché Pavia?” come se fosse una scelta strana, però Pavia era il posto perfetto; una bellissima città storica italiana circondata da un parco naturale ma solo 30min in treno da Milano, il cuore della moda e del design italiano.

A cultured city, home to one of Europe’s oldest universities, it seemed like an deal location to bring this dream to life, but once the city was decided it was not so easy to find the building; this is one of the problems with dreams… they tend to lead us to have very high standards!  After six months of carefully searching every street we found our beautiful premises in Via della Pusterla 26.

Una città colta e sede di una delle università più antiche dell’Europa, sembrava il posto ideale per costruire questo sogno, ma una volta decisa la città non è poi stata così facile trovare la sede; questo è il problema con i sogni… spesso ci portano ad avere delle aspettative altissime! Dopo sei mesi cercando lungo ogni via abbiamo trovato la nostra bellissima sede in Via della Pusterla 26.

We have a gallery space, studio, library/supplies room and bathrooms and also a little garden, there are no words to describe the enchantment which overcame me when I fist saw it and met the owner, there is something truly magical about the place

Abbiamo una galleria, un laboratorio, una biblioteca/magazzino di materiali, servizi e un giardinetto delizioso, non ci sono parole per descrivere l’incanto che mi ha preso la prima volta che l’o visto e conosciuto la proprietaria, c’è qualcosa di veramente magico in questo posto.

Having all the ingredients of a good story; a beautiful location, passion (for textiles) and a whole cast of interesting folk who come to learn, to teach and to exhibit, I hope this virtual space will become a mirror of the many interesting events that we have in programme and look forward to sharing them with you all.

Avendo tutti gli ingredienti di una bell storia; un bel ambiente, la passione (per i tessuti) e un cast di personaggi che passano a imparare, insegnare e mostrare i propri lavori, speri che questo spazio digitale diventi uno specchio dei numerosi eventi interessanti che abbiamo in programma e sarò molto felice di condividerli con voi.
